About

Ixora Frames started as a list of walks to take visiting friends on: the shaded paths of the Botanic Gardens, a morning loop through Joo Chiat, the trails around MacRitchie. The list grew pictures, and the pictures became this site in 2024.

The ixora is the small red flower in almost every hedge on the island. It seemed the right name for a site about ordinary, close-up Singapore.

How the walks are made

Every walk is one that can be done in a morning or an evening from a train station, without a car and without a guide. Each one is walked again at least once a year; when a path closes, a stall moves or a bridge is repaired, the notes change and the updates page says so. The box next to each walk shows when its notes were last checked.

The site is kept simple on purpose: no adverts, no accounts, no cookies and nothing to install. It is updated every month or two. If you use a feed reader, the feed lists the same changes.

About the photos

All 92 photos here are shared by their photographers under open licences (Creative Commons or public domain) and were found on Wikimedia Commons. Each one is credited under the picture with a link to its licence and its original page. The copies here are resized; nothing else is changed. Some of the oldest are scans of prints and postcards from around 1900, kept to show how the same streets looked then.

If you took one of these photos and would rather it weren't here, it will be taken down; the original page on Wikimedia Commons is the place to find the photographer.
