The trails around MacRitchie Reservoir, an old view of the town reservoirs, and a slow afternoon on Pulau Ubin.

MacRitchie is the oldest reservoir on the island. The boardwalks along the edge are flat and shaded; the treetop walk and Jelutong Tower add climbs and the best views over the forest canopy.

Take water. There are few taps past the first kilometre, and the long-tailed macaques know what a plastic bag means; keep food out of sight.

Pulau Ubin is a different day: hire a bicycle by the jetty and ride the gravel roads past quarry lakes and old kampong houses. Chek Jawa, at the eastern end, has a boardwalk out over the mangroves and the shore.

The last boats back leave around dusk, and fewer run on weekdays. Check the tide table if you want to see Chek Jawa's flats uncovered.
